We Fight Like…Tigers

It began with a simple chant that reverberated throughout the city…

In 1914, the UofM football team was known as the Blue and Gray Warriors. After the final game of that season, a few students shouted, “We fight like tigers.” The nickname stuck, but didn’t become official until 1939. About 30 years ago, a live Bengal tiger, named TOM, started attending all Tiger football home games and other University events. TOM is housed and cared for by an outside organization and travels in a climate-controlled trailer. The current tiger is TOM III, the third live tiger to represent our university in the past 30 years. The university also has a costumed tiger mascot lovingly known as Pouncer.
